SELO’s founding members united to strengthen the presence of Serbian culture in Niagara, Canada. The organization seeks to achieve this goal by hosting events, offering education, and creating local community hubs.
SELO is a branch of the St. George & St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church of Niagara Falls, a Church-School Congregation in the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Canada. The organization adheres to the By-laws of the St. George & St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church of Niagara Falls, and the Statutes of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Canada as an auxiliary organization.
Each member of SELO comes from a Serbian background, or demonstrates an appreciation and knowledge of Serbian heritage, as assessed by the Executive Council. Membership opportunities range in responsibilities and expectations, as outlined below.
SELO's efforts are focused in 3 distinct categories:
Events - Hosting public gatherings to celebrate Serbian heritage and unite the Serbian community. This includes SELO's annual flagship event, the Vidovdan community picnic.
Education - Launching initiatives to provide authentic and accurate teaching of Serbian history and culture. This will range from physical installations to partnerships with local schools.
Community - Creating, expanding and maintaining Serbian-owned community hubs. This includes the development of educational, entertainment and athletic resources for the any Serbian community in the diaspora.
Also known as Circle of Serbian Sisters. Founded in 1903. Niagara district organization was founded in 1935 and are responsible for a variety of programs.
Also known as The People's Defence. Founded in October 1908. Operates Voice of Canadian Serbs (Glas Kanadskih Srba) publication in Canada.
